‘ETHAN’
by Arran Agyeman-Ellis
The Inception
For A2 Media studies our task was to produce a
film promotion package which includes
three products: a film trailer, a poster and
magazine.
Before even planning our trailer, we had to do
some research into the post apocalyptic
genre so that we could gain an
understanding of typical themes,
characters, settings, narrative and technical
aspects.
I have applied my post-apocalyptic genre
research to help enable me develop a
successful final trailer.

Poster
For my poster research I looked at two post-
apocalyptic film posters. One of them was well
presented and the other one was not. My intention
was to compare them together; to see the differences
between them and so that I could gain an
understanding of what works on a poster and what
doesn’t. I wanted to gain inspirations from other film
posters and I could use elements from my researched
posters to help improve our poster design.
Good Poster
Will Smith plays the leading role in this
film, his name is displayed with big font
size because he is an A-list Hollywood star
and the spacing between each letter
makes it easier for the viewer to see.
Behind Will Smith we see rather bleak
and saturated landscape. Far back into
the background we can see the ruin of
the Empire State building this shows
the viewer that the film is set in New
York.
Overturned clearly shows that this film
is set on New York, which is bustling
metropolis and now it has become the
complete opposite a desolated city
where things are left abandoned.
‘Coming soon’ clearly indicates that this is a
teaser poster as it’s goal is to provide
excitement for the viewers to keep them
hyped up till the film’s release.
The USP of this poster has to be Will
Smith. Using an A-list Hollywood actor
instantly draws in fans who have enjoyed
watching him in other films. He is
positioned to right side of the poster not
be at the centre which does seem unusual
but the makers of this poster wanted to
also show the background behind him to
provide the viewers with a small hint into
the films narrative.
The hazard sign clearly indicates that
this film’s narrative is based around a
global pandemic showing the city is
unsafe.
The title behind the black background
uses white typography which immediately
draws in the viewers attention.
Films tagline is shown the bottom of
the poster. It is a very effective
tagline as it says he ‘the last man on
earth’ this is emphasised with him
being in the foreground; being the
brand image for this poster, but then
it says he ‘is not alone’ which
provides an enigma for the viewer,
who will start questioning who else is
out there etc.
