FILM POSTERS
AND MAGAZINE COVERS
FILM POSTERS
• Dystopian film posters will generally always have the name of the film. This is normally the biggest word on the poster, and is
often in a signature font.
• The actors will normally be listed above the film title, always including the star actor. If a famous actor is starred and
considered a pull factor, their name is more likely to be on the poster and in a bigger font (eg Tom Cruise in Oblivion, far left). If
they are not that big, they will sometimes not be listed (eg District 9 (far right).
• The same kind can be said for a picture of the actor; as we see in the two posters on the left and the bottom right, Tom Cruise,
Clive Owen and Harrison Ford are pictured. However, on the District 9 poster there is no actor pictured.
• There is almost always a tagline for the film; normally at the top of the poster or above the film’s title.
• The name of the director is sometimes on the poster, but normally only when the director is famous/critically acclaimed. For
example, Peter Jackson on District 9, Alfonso Cuaron on Children of Men.
• The production company of the film will almost definitely be listed, however they may be in a very small font, paragraph
looking section at the bottom.
• At the very bottom is almost always the release date.
FILM MAGAZINE COVERS
• Film magazine covers will generally feature the magazine’s name/logo. This is normally in a distinctive font and/or colour (eg.
white for Total Film, red for Empire).
• They normally feature more than one film, but the cover will feature one film especially, normally offering some sort of
exclusives (eg ‘The ultimate exclusive!’ and ‘first official pics’ on Dark Knight Rises issue of Empire).
• The main character(s) of the film featured on the cover will normally be featured. The background will often also be a shot of
the film, but what makes the characters stand out is that they are normally placed over the magazine name (as is seen in all four
pictures across the bottom of the page).
• Second to the magazine name, the next largest font is normally the name of the main film on the cover. This will often be a
contrasting colour to the font used for the magazine name.
• Smaller segments of text are normally dotted either along the bottom or up the sides of the cover, briefly mentioning what else
is included in the issue of the magazine.
• Other things on the cover include barcodes, prices, dates and issue numbers.
