A Day in the Life of your Child at
Sun Hill Infant School
Mission Statement

At Sun Hill Infant School we strive to generate a warm caring atmosphere in
which all children can flourish and achieve success.

Difference between children are recognised and celebrated. All members of
the school community encourage children to work and play alongside each
other happily and harmoniously. We provide exciting, interesting learning
experiences which build upon individual children’s strengths and interests.
We also ensure that all children are give opportunities to develop their

Beginning the Day
• Sun Hill Schools
breakfast club is open
from 7.30 am for both
infant and junior school
pupils
• Some children come
every day and some just
occasionally
• £4.50 per session
• Second child price £3.50
Coming into School
• The teachers open the
classroom doors at 8.45am
• Parents may bring their
children into the classroom to
see them settled.
• Many of the children quickly
request that mum or dad wait
at the steps and let them come
into class themselves.
The cloakroom
• Each child has their own coat
hook labelled with their name
and a picture for quick
identification.
• If you ensure that your child’s
coat has a sizable loop, they
will be able to hang it up by
themselves.
• Children who have a packed
lunch tuck their lunch boxes
under the bench underneath
their coats.
In the Classroom
• Children can choose a new
book to share with you at
home every day if they wish.
• Often children will choose a
favourite book again and again
• All children will have a ‘reading
log’ for you to record your
shared reading experiences.
Book Bags
• There will be opportunities for
you to buy a book bag for your
child at all of the pre school
sessions.
• They are very useful for
carrying notes, replies to
letters and dinner money etc,
but you do need to check them
every night
Drinks
• Milk is free until your child’s
fifth birthday.
• Most children bring in a flask of
water or diluted fruit juice. This
is kept in the café for easy
access during the day.
• The children may also have a
drink of water at any time of
the day.
Registration
• Children self – registrate every morning using the interactive
whiteboard.
School Dinners
• School dinners are now free for all infant aged children.
• Every day there are two main meals offered, one of which is
vegetarian.
• Children can choose their main meal in the morning when they
registrate.
• They are also able to select from at least 3 different desserts
including fruit.
• Menus can be viewed outside the office, on the classroom doors
and online at www.hants.gov.uk/caterers
• Water is served to all children.

5 A Day
• All children in the school begin
both the morning and
afternoon sessions with a
physical exercise programme
which they follow on the
interactive whiteboard.
English
• Children read in class every
day. They read all together, in
small groups, with an adult or
on their own
• In the role play area children
develop their speaking and
listening skills and their writing
skills.
Physical Development
• Children have lessons from the
Perins team once a week
building on the Fundamentals
of sports- strength, stamina,
speed
• The children also have lessons
in dance and gymnastics
• There are also bikes, and a
variety of ride-on equipment on
the patio which the children
can use in all weathers
Frogs
• Our Frogs sessions follow an exercise programme to develop coordination and core stability.
Maths
• Maths happens every day
in lots of different ways!
Knowledge of the World
• The children love the opportunity to carry out investigations,
predicting, planning, observing, discussing and drawing simple
conclusions.
Snack Time
• Children may bring a healthy
snack to eat during the
morning
• Alternatively, children are
offered a piece of fresh fruit or
vegetable supplied free by the
government
• They eat their snack and drink
their milk or squash in the cafe
Lunchtime
• At lunchtime as well as teaching and learning support staff, the
children are helped to manage their lunchtimes by two play leaders.
ICT
• Laptops, Beebots, cameras, Ipads and ‘easy speaks’ are always
available for the children to explore.
Creative Arts- music
• The children have a taught
lesson once a week in the
studio, but instruments are
always available for music
making in the classroom and
the musical garden.
• We have professional artists
that come into the school to
share their work with us.
• We are working towards a
Sing Up award this year so the
children sing every day.
Creative Arts- Visual
• Every year the children have
the opportunity to work with
professional dancers and with
artists who work in all kinds of
different mediums
• We are also lucky enough to
have a fully functioning art
studio complete with a kiln.
• Mrs Gandy is our in house
resident artist who helps
across all of the year groups.
Assembly
• Children participate in ten minutes of collective worship every day.
This forms part of either a whole school or a class assembly.
Home Time
•
The children are collected at 3.25pm from
their classroom doors. Teachers are always
available for a quick chat or to share good
news.
•
There is a drop in session on the first
Tuesday of the month to discuss progress/
issues you may have for your child.
•
The children are also given a special
correspondence book that messages can be
written in every day. A member of staff will
sign they have read it and act on the
information (maybe a phone call home if
required)
•
After school club runs until 6pm every day
and can take after clubs
£8 per session/ £7.50 second child
