Linear and cyclic patterns
♫ What is the difference between linear and cyclic patterns? ♫
Linear patterns involve different sections, as in binary (AB)
and ternary (ABA) form. Western music tends to be linear.
Cyclic patterns repeat and gradually change and develop.
Music from Africa, Indonesia and India is often cyclic.
