Definition
Statistics
The study of data: how to collect,
summarize and present it.
Population
the entire group being studied
Sample
the part of the population being surveyed
Biased
sample
A sample is biased if individuals or groups
from the population are not represented in
the sample.
Random
sample
A selection that is chosen randomly
(purely by chance)
Bias
Prejudice in favor of or against one thing,
person, or group compared with
another, usually in a way considered to
be unfair.
• Turn to a neighbor and share where you have seen someone be
biased toward or against something.

• A record store manager asks customers who

Organizing Data
• A table is a great way to organize and display
data so that you can understand the meaning
and recognize any relationships

• A stem-and-leaf plot is another way to display
data.
– Stem is the “tens” values
– Leaves are the “ones” values
Creating a table
Use the given data to make a table.
• Jack timed his bus rides to and from school. On
Monday, it took 7 minutes to get to school and 9
minutes to get home. On Tuesday, it took 5 minutes
and 9 minutes, respectively, on and Wednesday, it
took 8 minutes and 7 minutes.
