9-2 Organizing Data
Organizing raw data can help you see
patterns and trends. One way to organize
data is to use a line plot. A line plot uses
a number line to show how often a value
occurs in a data set.

Additional Example 1: Organizing Data in Line
Plots
Use a line plot to organize the math exam scores.

Find the least value, 50, and the greatest value,
100, in the data set. Then draw a number line from
50 to 100. Place an “x” above each number on the
number line for each time it appears in the data set.

9-2 Organizing Data
A stem-and-leaf plot is another way to
display data. The values are grouped so
that all but the last digit is the same in
each category.
Stem = first digits(s)
2 5 = 25
Leaf = last digit
Course 3

Additional Example 2: Reading Stem-and-Leaf Plots
List the data values of the stem-and-leaf plot.
1 25
Key: 1 2 means 12
4 011
5 279
The data values are:
12, 15, 40, 41, 41, 52, 57, and 59.

2 36
Key: 2 3 means 23
3 789
4 256
The data values are:
23, 26, 37, 38, 39, 42, 45, and 46.
Course 3
9-2 Organizing Data
A back-to-back stem-and-leaf plot
is used to compare two sets of data.
The stems are in the center, and the
left leaves are read in reverse.
