Comparing and
Ordering:
Fractions & Decimals
What is comparing and
ordering?
• Deciding which number is GREATER,
or larger, and which is LESSER, or
smaller.
• You use 3 symbols:
 › for greater than
 ‹ for less than
 = to show two numbers are equal
How do you compare and
order numbers?
• Step 1: write numbers so that they
are ALL decimals
• Step 2: line decimals up and compare
them from left to right
To compare ¼ and 0.4:
• Write ¼ as a decimal by dividing the
numerator (1) by the denominator (4):
Now compare 0.25 and 0.4
• Line up decimals and add zeros where
needed. Then compare them left to
right.
To order 3/5, 0.66, and
13/10 from least to greatest:
• Change 3/5 and 13/10 to decimals by
dividing their numerators by their
denominators.
Now order 0.60, 1.30, and
0.66 from least to greatest
• Line up decimals, and zeros where
needed, and compare them from left
to right.
