Pre-Assessment for Unit 3
5.NBT.7
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to
hundredths, using concrete models or drawings
and strategies based on place value,
properties of operations, and/or the
relationship between addition and subtraction;
relate the strategy to a written method and
explain the reasoning used.
ADDING MULTI-DIGIT NUMBERS

CUSTOMARY LENGTH
12 inches (in) = 1 foot (ft)
36 inches = 3 feet or 1 yard
(yd)
5,280 feet = 1 mile (mi)
To change from a larger
unit of measure to a
smaller unit, MULTIPLY.
To change from a
smaller unit of measure
to a larger unit, DIVIDE.
Inches, Feet, Yards, Miles

5 6
Keep in mind that you are multiplying
6 x8
6 x 70
6 x 200
We always add the zero as the place holder
because we are now multiplying by 10s.
50 x8
50 x70
50 x 200
MULTIPLYING DECIMALS
STANDARD ALGORITHM with DECIMALS
2 7 8
5 6
Multiply just as you would with the
standard algorithm.
Look at how many decimal places
there are.
Think- How many digits are there behind
the decimal.
In your final answer, move your decimal
over the number of digits

Estimate- 12
Actual answer- 13.685
MEAN, MODE, MEDIAN
Mean
Mode
The mean is the numerical
average of the data set.
The number that appears
the most in the set.
The mean is found by adding
all the values in the set, then
dividing the sum by the number
of values
Example
1+2+4+5+5+5+6+7+8+9+
10=62
5 is the mode.
62 11= 5.6
1,2,4,5,5,5,6,7,8,9,10
Median
The number that is in the middle.
Arrange the numbers in order
from least to greatest.
When there is an even number
you take the two numbers and
divide them by two.
Example
1,2,4,5,5,5,6,7,8,9,10
5 is the median in this set

HOMEWORK
LOOK AT MATH IPP
With your child, go over the IPP
and set goals with your children.
Ask- What are we striving for
this unit?
Ask- What are you going to do
as a student to reach this goal?
Ask- How can I assist you as a
parent?
Ask- How can Ms.Green assist
you as a teacher?
