• Consists of the President, the VicePresident and his Cabinet (Presidential
Advisors selected by the President).
• Main job of the President- enforce the laws
and help carry out the duties and
responsibilities of the federal government.
• PEEL- President Executive Enforces Laws

Requirements of the President
• MUST be a natural-born citizen.
• Must be a resident of the U.S for 14 years.
• Must be a minimum age of 35 years old.
Terms of Office
The President’s term is 4 years.
• The President can serve for 2 elected terms. (22nd
Amendment)
• The President can serve a maximum of 10 years.
Powers of the President
• Has the power to approve or veto (deny)
laws.
• Makes treaties with foreign governments.
• Nominates judges to the Supreme Court.
• Appoints cabinet members
• Is Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. military
forces.
The Cabinet- Advisors to the
President
• The Cabinet has 15
different departments.
• Each department has
its own duties and
responsibilities.
• Example: Department of
Homeland Security.

Executive Order
• The President has the authority to establish a
rule or order that has the same force of laws.
• Since 1789, over 13,000 have been
established.
• It stems from Article II (2) of the Constitution
that says the “grant of executive power”, which
combined with the “Commander and Chief” title
allows for this. This method will bypass
Congress, and the Supreme Court as upheld all
but 2 Executive Orders.

• Lincoln- Emancipation Proclamation
• Franklin Roosevelt- allowed JapaneseAmericans internment camps during WW2
• John F. Kennedy- 1960’s barred discrimination
in federal housing, hiring, and contracting.
• Obama- allow upwards of 5 million
undocumented immigrants to stay in the
country temporarily without fear of deportation.
