Example 1
Ice cream sundaes at Gary’s Creamery come in 5 flavors with
4 possible toppings.
How many different sundaes can be made with one flavor of ice
cream and one topping?
Multiply the number of options for ice cream
with the number of options for toppings.
There are a total of 20 possible sundaes.
5 ⋅ 4 = 20
Example 2
Would it be OK for 2 different cars to have the same license plate?
Why are there license plates on all cars? What are they used for?
How many possible different license plates can
be issued in Oregon?
10 x 10 x 10 x 26 x 26 x 26 = 17,576,000
Oregon doesn’t use the letters I or O
because they might be mistaken for 1 & zero.
How many license plates are possible if you can’t
use I or O as letters?
10 x 10 x 10 x 24 x 24 x 24 = 13,824,000
Example 3
What is the probability of winning the school raffle where
the winning number is made up of 3 digits from 0 to 9
chosen at random if the numbers can repeat?
Find the total number of possible outcomes.
10 ⋅ 10 ⋅ 10 = 1000
