Variable Vocab:
• Variable – letter used to represent one or
more numbers
• Values of the variable – numbers that
can replace the variable
• Variable expression – expression that
contains a variable
• Numerical expression (or numeral) – an
expression that names a specific number

• Two different EXPRESSIONS can say the same
thing:

Substitution Principle- an expression can be replaced
by another expression of the same value.
• 12 + (4  2)
• 12  (4 + 2)
• (3 + 2)  (6 – 1)
Evaluate each expression when m = 1 and n = 2.
• 3(n + 4)
