to use order of operations to simplify
whole number expressions (without
exponents) in problem solving
situations.

Order of Operations
This is the process used to
solve mathematical expressions
with more than one operation.
Step 1 – Do all operations in
parentheses FIRST.
Step 2 – Multiply & Divide from
left to right
Step 3 – Add & Subtract from
left to right.
What is an expression?
An expression is a mathematical
sentence that has numbers and
operations but no equal sign.
Example
24 + 10 – 2 x 8
What is an Equation?
An equation is a mathematical
sentence that contains,
numbers, operations and an
equal sign.
Example
18 + 11 x 5 = 73
