Choose a “pet” verb
• Look at the vocabulary list of –ar verbs.
• Choose a verb from the list, or one that we
have already learned. (trabajar, bailar, cantar, etc.)
• That verb is your pet. You must know what
it means and how to conjugate it.
• If someone is having trouble with that verb,
they will ask you for help.
Expressing obligation
• In Spanish, two phrases are often used to say
that someone MUST or HAS to do something.
The first phrase refers to someone specific.
(Example: he, my mom, Marta)
Tener que + infinitive
You conjugate tener according the subject.
Example: Tù tienes que ayudar tu padre.
He has to study.
Él tiene que estudiar.
We have to wait for my brother.
Nosotros tenemos que esperar a mi hermano.
I have to use the computer.
Yo tengo que usar la computadora.

• The second phrase that is used to talk about
what one must do is:
– Hay que + infinitive
• Hay que is used when there is NOT a
specific subject.
– For example: You have to (one must) listen in
class.
– You have to (one must) study.
One must prepare the homework.
Hay que preparar la tarea.
