What is a sentence?
• A sentence is a
group of words
containing a
subject and a
verb.
• A sentence must
make sense!!
What is a simple sentence?
• Can stand alone
(independent)
• Can contain
compound parts
(such as two subject,
two verbs, or both)
• The squirrel found
and buried the food.
What is a compound sentence?
• two or more simple sentences
joined together
• may be joined by a semicolon or a
comma and a coordinating
conjunction
Semicolon
• Compound sentences
can be joined
together by a
semicolon.
• The squirrel climbed
the bird feeder; the
birds flew away.
Coordinating Conjunctions
• Compound sentences
can be joined by a
comma and a
conjunction.
• but, or, yet, for, and,
nor, so
• The bird climbed the
bird feeder, and the
birds flew away.
Examples
• Justin Lebo of Saddle Brook, New Jersey, loved
bikes.
• He and his dad shared an interest in bicycle
racing.
• They had their garage set up like a bike shop;
they worked there on bikes all the time.
