SENTENCES VS. PHRASES
• A sentence is a group of words that
makes sense on its own.
• Every Sentence must contain a Verb.
• A phrase is a group of words that
does not make sense on its own.
• Most phrases are short. Most
phrases do NOT contain verbs.
The girls ran along the beach.
• This is a sentence.
• It makes sense on its own.
• It contains a verb. (ran)

• In IELTS some answers should be no more
than three words. These are phrases.
• You should also know how to
paraphrase…use another phrase or
different way of saying the same thing.
