Verb Tenses

What is a verb?



A verb is word that expresses an ACTION or
STATE OF BEING.
Example ACTION verbs: eat, fly, talk, study
Example STATE OF BEING verbs: is, are,
was, were, be, been, being
Present Participle


The present participle of a verb is formed by
adding –ing to the present part.
Examples:
jump = jumping
tap = tapping
sing = singing
Past Participle


The past participle of a verb is formed by
adding –ed to the present part.
Examples:
jump = jumped
step = stepped
dash = dashed
SIMPLE TENSES






Past = an action that happened in the past
Example: They played quietly for an hour.
Present = an action that is always true or happens
again and again
Example: The children play games at recess.
Future = tells an action that will happen
Example: The children will play kickball.
PROGRESSIVE TENSE
Past Progressive



Past Progressive = tells what was happening in
the past
This is formed by using was or were with the
present participle.
Example: He was riding his bike when the
accident happened.
PROGRESSIVE TENSE
Present Progressive



Present Progressive = tells what is happening
now
This is formed by using am, is, or are with the
present participle.
Example: He is riding his bike in the park.
PROGRESSIVE TENSE
Future Progressive



Future Progressive = tells what will happen in
the future
This is formed by using will be, is going to be,
or are going to be with the present participle.
He is going to be having a cast put on his
broken leg.
PERFECT TENSES
Past Perfect



Past Perfect = tells about a past action that was
completed before another past action started
This is formed by using had with the past
participle.
Example: Sam had eaten a piece of cake
before his mother got home.
PERFECT TENSES
Present Perfect



Present Perfect = tells about an action that
happened at some indefinite time in the past or
an action that started in the past and continues
into the present time.
This is formed by using have or has with the
past participle.
Example: Laura has made pasta salad for
lunch.
PERFECT TENSES
Future Perfect



Future Perfect = used to talk about a future
event that will be started and completed before
another future event.
This is formed by using will have with the past
participle.
Example: We will have eaten lunch by the
time 7/8 starts recess.
