The last of the verbals.
What are infinitives?
They are formed by taking “to” plus a verb
To go, to run, to fly, to swim
Infinitives are verbals that can be adjectives,
adverbs, or nouns!
Let’s deal with infinitives as nouns…
What are the functions of a noun?
SUBJECT
DIRECT OBJECT
INDIRECT OBJECT (not too often)
OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION
(hardly ever)
PREDICATE NOMINATIVE
THAT’S PREDICATE NOMINATIVE
So, tell me how these infinitives are
functioning.
To win is important.
I hate to lose.
My goal is to travel.
Infinitive phrases
What can these be? Duh.
Intinitives PLUS words that relate to it.
Whole phrase behaves like a noun, adverb,
or adjective
Example:
To love grammar is hard.
My goal is to pass language arts.
Put it all together…find the infinitive
and tell me what it is doing.
We hoped to travel this summer.
I am learning to ski this winter.
To write a book would be easy.
The best habit is to work slowly.
The book was easy to read.
He started to faint, so he went to the doctor.
The doctor to see was out to lunch.
Write your own sentence based on the
