Growing Up
 Prometheus was the son of Iapetos and Themis
 He had 3 brothers , Atlas , Epimetheus, and
Menoetius
 The goddess Athene taught him- architecture,
mathematics, navigation, and medicine
 He in turn taught these things to humans
 Sometimes referred to as the giver of fire
Prometheus In General
 Was a titan of forethought and crafty counsel who was
entrusted with the task of molding mankind out of
clay
 Also referred to as the champion of mankind
 He wasn’t a god he was a titan
 He was worshipped by craftsmen
Conflicts
 He attempted to make the lives of his creation better
but that brought him into conflict with Zeus
 He stole fire from Zeus and gave it to his mortals
 Zeus punished him by having him tied to a rock while
an eagle ate his liver
 His liver grew back each time it was eaten
 Heracles released him from the rock

 Hercules used an arrow to kill the eagle that was eating
Prometheus’s liver
 Zeus created a flood to destroy all living creatures on
earth that Prometheus created

 It represents the time period in which Prometheus had
his liver eaten daily by an eagle
His Creation
 Prometheus created a human race that looked like
gods
 He had the Golden race, the Silver race, and the
Bronze race
 The first lived in the golden age of Cronus and the
titans
 The silver and bronze succeeded them
 Zeus destroyed the bronze in the flood he created
called the Great Deluge
What He Looked Like
 Prometheus had red/orange hair
 It was curly
 He had a moustache
Death of Prometheus
 In Greek mythology it is told that Prometheus never
dies
Interesting Facts
 Prometheus means “forethought”
 He was able to foretell the future
 The rock Prometheus was tied to was in Caucasus
 During Greek war for independence he became a
figure of hope and inspiration for the Greek
revolutionaries and there supporters
 Prometheus is the name of the oldest tree known
(it is located at the Great Basin National Park)
