Get out your essay
and 2 colors of
highlighters
Put a number in a circle next to each of
your 5 paragraphs – intro, 3 body,
conclusion.
Pick a color and highlight your thesis. Is
it the last sentence in your intro
paragraph? Does it tell the reader what
the next 3 paragraphs will be about?
Topic sentences
Look at your 3 body
paragraphs. Does each
paragraph have a topic
sentence that introduces
the paragraph and tells the
reader what the point of the
paragraph is? Highlight
the topic sentence in each
paragraph the same color
as the thesis.
Quotes – Evidence from the text
Does each paragraph have a quote from
Anthem that supports your thesis? Put a star
next to each quote.
Let’s look at how those quotes are cited.
In text citations - MLA

An in-text citation is a reference to the last
name of the author and the page number(s)
where the information is located. This can be
done by referring to the author in the body of
the text or through parenthetical citation.
Draw a box around your citations.
(Rand 37).
Author reference in text
Example:
Graham Greene attempts to establish both setting and
mood early in the novel when he points out “a few
vultures looked down from the roof ”(7).
The author’s name in the sentence before the quote,
so it is not included in the parenthesis.
Notice that the quote comes before the parenthesis
and the period comes after.
Parenthetical Citation
Example:
Both setting and mood are established early in the novel
through the use of a natural and man made
surroundings; “A few vultures looked down from the
roof” (Greene 7).
If the author is not mentioned prior to the quote, the
author’s last name and the page number are both
included in parentheses.
No comma is used to separate the name from the page
number.
Stop!
Take a minute and check your citations.
Check what is inside the parenthesis. Do you
need the name and page number?
Check your quotation marks. Are they correct?
Look at capitalization and commas.
Is the period after the citation?
