CARDINAL
POINTS
We use cardinal points to establish direction.
The principal cardinal points are:
NORTH
WEST
EAST
SOUTH
When we go out into the countryside, we can find our way by looking at
the sun or by using a compass.
A compass is an
instrument with a
magnetic needle which
always points north. One
end always points north
and the other end always
points south.
A compass help us find our way in a forest, at
sea or even in a city if we get lost.
•There are some
elements in nature
that can help us.
For example…
Every morning
the sun rises in
the east…
…and sets in the west.
When you know which direction is
east or west, it is very easy to find the
other directions.
At night you can find north looking for the North Star. The North Star
always indicates north.
Another way to find north is by looking for moss on rocks or stones.
Moss always grows on the coldest side of the stone, the side facing
north.
Activity
• Think:
Does sunlight enter your classroom in tne
morning or in the afternoon?
What direction does the entrance face of
your school?
