U.S. CANADA JOINT STATEMENT
Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Issue Joint
Statement Vowing to Cut Methane Emissions
Major Pledges Made in Joint Statement
Pledges
Details
Reduce methane emissions from
oil and gas wells
• U.S. and Canada have agreed to reduce methane emissions to 45% below
2012 levels by 2025
• This means the EPA will start regulating existing oil and gas wells, instead of
just new wells
• Next month, the EPA will ask oil and gas wells to complete plans to show
how they can be compliant with methane reductions
Craft joint plan to manage the
Arctic environment
• Preserve the Arctic's biodiversity
• Receive more input from indigenous groups when crafting environmental
policy
• Regulate all commercial activities including shipping and fishing so that it
meets highest environmental standards
End routine flaring by 2030
• Obama and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau said they wanted to end routine
flaring at oil and gas wells by 2030 due to its adverse environmental impact
Reduce aviation and transportation
GHG emissions
• Agreed to improve vehicle efficiency standards
• Extend this to post-2018 model heavy-duty vehicles
• Cooperate to reduce international aviation emissions
Strengthen electrical grid and
promote clean energy
• Integrate more renewables into interconnected electrical grid
• Improve North America’s electrical grid security
• Boost clean energy innovation through collaboration between U.S. and
Canadian energy agencies
