Origins
• Traced to India
• Buddhist literature -originally built for the
purpose of preserving the remains of
Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism
• Sanskrit pagoda (or stupa) meant tomb
• No equivalent for the Hindu word for pagoda in
the Chinese language
