Input / Output tables
Test Thursday
Hayden is thinking of a mystery number. His number is less than 5 and greater than -13. His number is located 4 spaces away
from 2 on the number line. What is his mystery number?
a) -6
b) -2
c) 6
d) This is not possible
The Sneetches
• What was the machine doing to the animals?
• The sneetch goes in as one thing and comes
out as something different because of
something that happened in that machine.
• Write a statement explaining what happened
to give the sneetches stars. Do this using
mathematical terms. Or signs (+,-,=)
Sneetch + a star made a star bellied sneetch
Star bellied sneetch – star= plain bellied sneetch
In this lesson, a special math machine will be
used. A number will go in and come out a
different number.

Output
This process is a function and the table
is a function table.
• X is used to represent the input number
• Y is used to represent the output number
• So, in the last table the equation X x 5 =y
could be used to show what is happening in
the function machine or function table.
What would be the equation for this
input / output machine?

Use this machine for the next problem.
