Activity – Label the diagram 
What is a volcano?
• A volcano is a land form (usually a mountain)
where molten rock erupts through the surface
of the planet.
• It is a hole in the Earth from which molten
rock and gas erupt.
• There are around 1,510 active volcanoes in
the world. We currently know of around 80
which are under the ocean.
What causes volcanoes to erupt?
• The Earth’s crust is made up of huge slabs called
‘plates’, which fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.
These plates sometimes move.
• Between the Earth’s crust and the mantle is
substance called magma which is made of rock
and gases.
• When two plates collide, one section slies on top
of the other, the one beneath is pushed down.
Magma is squeezed up between the two plates.
Activity!
Build your own volcano!
Things you will need:
-Paper mache materials

-Vinegar or lemon juice (1/2 cup per volcano)
-Red food colouring (few drops per volcano)
-Washing up liquid
-Safety goggles/coats (to protect clothing)

skill in using the visual elements and concepts. EXA203A
Science-Materials (Earth’s materials)
-Having explored the substances that make up Earth’s
surface, I can compare some of their characteristics and
uses. SCN2-17A
What are the three layers of the *
Earth?
