Parts of the Sun
• Drill: How many Earths could we fit inside
the sun?
• Objective: SWBAT identify and describe
the structures of the sun in order to
compare the properties of the sun to the
characteristics of the planets.
• HW: Diagrams due Thursday
The Sun is Comprised Of:
• A round collection of Hydrogen and
Helium divided into 3 layers.
• A dense atmosphere divided into 3 layers.
Oct. 16th of the Sun
• Drill: Label each part of the sun with the
following 3 words: Convection Zone,
Core, and Radiation Zone.
Is this the
atmosphere or
main body of
the sun?
Fusion

Fission

A Description of our Sun
• The Sun is comprised of
three layers:
• The atmosphere is
comprised of three layers:
– A dense center that
produces heat/energy
through nuclear fusion
– A middle layer that carries
the heat to the exterior
portion of sun
– An exterior that creates
currents that exchange
heat with the atmosphere.
As the heat is transferred
to the atmosphere cooler
air is carried back to the
middle to heat up again.
– The area closest to the sun
produces light waves that
we see
– The middle area that
serves as a transition zone
– The exterior layer which is
the largest layer of the
sun’s atmosphere where
charged particles
continually escape.
Definitions
• Corona: Exterior layer of the sun. The
largest area of the atmosphere extending
from the chromosphere outward millions of
kilometers into space. Visible portion
during a solar eclipse.
• Core: Dense center of the sun where
nuclear fusion occurs.
• Chromosphere: Transition zone of the
atmosphere between the photosphere and
corona.
Definitions
• Convection Zone: Area beyond the
radiation zone where materials are heated,
rise to the top, cool, then sink back to the
bottom of the zone.
• Photosphere: Lowest part of the
atmosphere and the layer from which light
is given off.
• Radiation Zone: Area of the sun that
surrounds the core. Transfers energy
from the core to the convection zone.

Oct. 16th Parts of Sun Review
• Drill: What 4 (four) star characteristics can
determine from a Hertzsprung Russell
diagram?
• Objective: SWBAT identify key parts of
the sun in order to create a model of the
sun’s layers.
• HW: Study
Dec. 10th Review
• Drill: Will our sun become a black hole?
Why or Why not?
• Objective: SWBAT identify key concepts
of stars in order to prepare for Tuesday’s
Test!
• HW: Study
Dec. 13th Review
• Drill: Draw a diagram of the sun. Include
the three parts of the body and three parts
of the atmosphere.
• Objective: SWBAT identify key concepts
of stars in order to prepare for Tuesday’s
Test!
