Transcript The Sun

THE SUN!
Imagine
going outside
on a clear, hot day and
feeling the warmth of
the sun. What do we
receive from the sun?
The Sun
Where are we going?

State Standard: 4. F Distinguish the
structure and movements of objects
in the solar system. (DOK 2)


Sun’s atmosphere (corona,
chromosphere, photosphere and core)
Objective: By the end of today,
Stingers reaching for the STARS will
know the key features of the four
layers of the sun!
Question of the Day
 If
just one part of the Sun
stopped working, would we
still have light here on Earth?
They Might Be Giants
 Write
down facts that you
know are true and ones that
you are unsure of
What is our sun?
 Our
sun is a star which is (1)
150 million kilometers from
Earth
 Average,
star
(2) medium sized
What is our sun?
 Unlike
Earth, the sun does
not have a solid surface.
 Instead,
the sun is a ball of
glowing gas!
What are the layers of the
sun?

The inner most layer is
the (3) core.

(4) Hottest area of the
sun

Nuclear (5) fusion
occurs in the core
(Hydrogen is fused into
(6) helium) and
produces nearly all of
the sun’s (7) energy
quick check for
ROCKSTAR status
What
does nuclear
fusion do for the sun?
What does it provide?
What are the layers of the
sun?
 Photosphere
is the
(8) innermost
layer of the suns
(9) atmosphere
 Photosphere
is the
sphere that gives
off (10) visible
light
What are the layers of the
sun?
 When
you look
at an image of
the sun, you are
looking at the
photosphere.

ROCKSTAR status
What
does the
photosphere give
earth?
What are the layers of the
sun?

The chromosphere
is the (11) middle
layer of the sun’s
atmosphere
 Means
“(12)Colorsphere”
What are the layers of the
sun?
 At
the start and
end of a total
eclipse, a reddish
glow is visible just
around the
photosphere. This
glow comes from
the chromosphere.
What are the layers of the
sun?
 The
(13) corona is
the (14) outer most
layer of the sun’s
atmosphere
 Corona
means (15)
“crown” in Latin
 Looks like a white
halo!

is the
innermost layer of
the sun?

Where
is the sun’s
energy produced?

Which
of the
sun’s layers
produces visible
light?

Why
is it usually
impossible to see
the sun’s corona
from Earth?
What layer of the sun do
you see in this picture?
What are you looking at in
a picture of the sun?
INDEPENDENT
PRACTICE

You are going to be creating a model of the Sun and all of
the Sun’s layers. Use page 732-733 to help you out!

Your drawing should include the 4 distinct layers of the sun
(Make sure you label them!!!)

On the back of your picture, write me one sentence for each
layer…describing what the sun would be like WITHOUT that
layer…
 For example….”Without the corona, the sun wouldn’t
have a white halo around it.”
Closing
Who
can name the three
layers of the sun and
SUMMARIZE the key
features of each layer?
