• On your scrap piece of paper list as many
examples of cycles as you can. For example
the water cycle.
• Today’s Schedule
• 1. Schedule/Updates for the week
• 2. The Rock Cycle

Igneous

I. What are cycles?
• an interval during which a recurring sequence
of events occurs.
•
II. What is the rock cycle?
• A series of processes on Earth’s surface and in
the crust and mantle that slowly change rocks
from one kind to another. Interactive Rock Cycle Animation
• How can sedimentary rock
become metamorphic?
• How can metamorphic
rock become igneous?
• How can igneous rock
become sedimentary?
III. How do plate tectonics and the
rock cycle relate?
• Plate movement = magma = igneous rocks
• Plate movement = faulting, folding, and other
motions of the crust = sedimentary &
metamorphic rocks

Rock Star Biography
• Pick one type of rock and write a
Possible “biography” of the rock as it
moves through the rock cycle. Your
story should state the type of rock, how
the rock formed, and how it changed.
Be creative!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
• Larz Lava was born 4 billion years ago when a
volcano erupted and the lava hardened into an
igneous rock. Larz was destined for stardom from the
beginning, when he rose from the bottom of a magma
chamber and erupted explosively onto the rock and
roll scene. After years of heavy weathering, Larz’s
body was broken and beat down and was eroded into
the ocean, where he was deposited into the depths of
despair and hit a low point in his life. After years of
compaction, cementation, and re-building, Larz
reappeared with the new look of a sedimentary rock.
Larz was riding the momentum of his new look when
tragedy struck again and he was subducted into the
mantle. Millions of years went by but the heat and
pressure of the mantle only made Larz stronger. Larz
had changed into a metamorphic rock and his career
was reborn.
• Turn your HW in. You should have 8 note cards.
One card is for each of the following terms:
Igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary,
weathering, erosion, deposition, compaction,
cementation. Set your cards up like the
examples below.
Def: A rock made of hardened magma/lava.
2 types intrusive and extrusive depending
on where they form.
Synonyms: fire, magma, lava
Sentence: Igneous rocks form from the
cooling and hardening of magma.

Rock Cycle Lab
• Lab is due at the end of class.
• The objective of this lab is to demonstrate how
a ‘crayon’ rock goes through the different
processes of the rock cycle.
• Complete the Lab Sheet as well as the Rock
Cycle Handout.
• Follow the procedure! Read the directions! Ask
Questions if needed!
• You may work with 1 partner to complete the
lab.
