Charles Richter is the man who discovered
a way to measure the size or magnitude of
a earth quake. He used an instrument
called a seismograph to determine how big
of an earth quake we have had.
Metamorphic rocks were once
either igneous or sedimentary
rocks that changed through heat
and pressure to create a new kind
of rock. Like a diamond.
The epicenter is the spot on the crust
directly above the focus of the earth
quake.

Igneous rock is made when hot
liquid magma is pushed out of the
earth. When this magma cools it
hardens and creates a rock.Like
lava rocks.
The Mercalli scale is a way of measuring
the magnitude of an earth quake.
Mercalli relied of human perception to
determine the damage the earth quake
had caused. He used the destruction of
buildings and the bending of rail road
tracks to determine this.
A sedimentary rock is made
when silt deposits made up of
mud and small rocks are put
under extreme pressure. The
end result is a rock. Like flag
stone or sand stone.
Magnitude was a term used by
Richter to describe the intensity of
an earth quake. He derived the term
from astronomy where they use it to
describe the size of a star.
