Transcript Today’s Objectives 11/9/09

Welcome to Science 11/3
• Get out your Rock Outline/Chart that you began
yesterday. Answer questions 1-4 on your own.
• Turn in any late HWs from yesterday.
Today’s Schedule
• 1. Question of the Day
• 2. Continue
Discussion on Rocks
Question of the Day
• This is a 2 part question.
• 1. What type of rock makes up 90% of Earth’s
crust?
• Igneous rock
• If igneous rock makes up 90% of Earth’s crust
how did other rocks form to make the remaining
10% of Earth’s crust?
• Weathering & erosion helped make new types
of rock as well as processes like EQs and
subduction.
Igneous Rocks
Igneous Rocks
• Igneous come from the latin word
ignis, meaning “fire”
• 90 % of Earth’s crust is made of
igneous rock. So, what are igneous
rocks made from?
• Magma and lava
Igneous Rocks
• If igneous rocks form from magma and lava,
where can igneous rocks form?
• On the surface = extrusive rock
• Below the surface = intrusive rock
Granite
Gneiss
Sandstone
• Quartzite
Shale
• Slate
Welcome to Science 1/4
• Take your HW out and also take your
notes out.
• Today’s Schedule
• 1. Video of the Day
• 2. Challenger Mission
• 3. Go over HW
• 4. Metamorphic Rocks
• 5. HW Assignment
Mighty Metamorphic Rocks
What does metamorphic mean?
Dynamic Change
What does it take to morph rock?
• When heat & pressure from
Deep inside Earth change
a rocks minerals, it becomes
a metamorphic rock.
How do rocks get deep inside Earth or
how does heat come to the surface?
• Subduction
• Converging plates
• Rising magma

Directions: Each circle
represents 1 of the 3
groups of rocks. In each
circle write information
about that group of rock.
If groups of rock of
something in common,
write the info in the area
where the circles
overlap. You need to
have at least 5 facts
for each group of rock
and at least 5 facts
that are shared by the
groups of rock.
