Common STIs
Objectives:
1) Describe the symptoms and treatments of
some common STDs.
Common STIs: HPV
Human Papillomavirus (HPV): a virus
that can cause many different infections in
the genital area.
HPV is the most common STD in the United
States. About 50 to 70 percent of sexually
active males and females will acquire
HPV at some time during their lives.
1)
Common STIs: HPV
The most common form of HPV is genital
warts.
Genital Warts: pink or reddish warts with
cauliflower-like tops that appear on the
genitals 1 to 3 months after being infected.
They are highly contagious.
Common STIs: HPV
Examination and treatment are essential,
because once infected, a person will have
them for the rest of his or her life.
Treatments can get rid of the warts but not the
virus.
Common STIs: HPV
Complications of genital warts can cause
different types of cancer and birth defects.
Treatment includes antiviral medicines for the
warts, but again, nothing can be done for
the virus itself.
Common STIs: Chlamydia
2) Chlamydia: a bacterial infection that
affects the reproductive organs of females
and males
Symptoms include unusual discharge from
penis or vagina and a burning sensation
upon urination.
Common STIs: Chlamydia
Since chlamydia is a bacteria, antibiotics can
be used to treat it but your body will never
build an immunity towards it, so you can
become infected again.
Common STIs: Genital
Herpes
3) Genital Herpes: an STD caused by the
herpes simplex virus (HSV)
There are two types of HSV:
1) Type 1: causes cold sores
2) Type 2: causes genital herpes
Common STIs: Genital
Herpes
Symptoms of Type 2 herpes includes a
periodic showing of blister-like sores in the
genital area.
Type 2 herpes can be treated by anitviral
medications but cannot be cured.
Common STIs: Gonorrhea
4) Gonorrhea: a bacterial STD that affects
mucous membranes
Symptoms of gonorrhea include an unusual
discharge from the genitals and pain or
burning upon urination.
Treatments include antibiotics.
Common STIs:
Trichomoniasis
5) Trichomoniasis: an STD caused by a
microscopic protozoan that results in
infections of the vagina, urethra, and
bladder.
Common STIs:
Trichomoniasis
Symptoms include:
Females- inflammation of the vagina, unusual
vaginal discharge, and burning upon
urination
Males- urethral itching, penile discharge, and
burning upon urination
Common STIs:
Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis is treated with antibiotics but
also can disappear with time.
Common STIs: Syphilis
6) Syphilis: is an STD that attacks many parts
of the body and is caused by bacteria
Symptoms include small reddish chancres at
the site of the infection. The sore will heal
on its own, but if not treated, the infection
can spread through the blood to the rest of
the body.
Common STIs: Syphilis
Eventually, the disease can damage the heart,
liver, nervous system, and kidneys.
If left untreated, syphilis can cause paralysis,
convulsions, blindness, and heart disease.
Antibiotics are used for treatment.
Common STIs: Seeking
Treatment
Prevention of STDs is everyone’s
responsibility but treatment is a personal
responsibility. STDs can cause severe,
long-term health problems and only health
care professionals and prescribe the correct
treatment.
Common STIs: Seeking
Treatment
Individuals also have a social obligation to
prevent the spread of STDs. It is the
responsibility of the infected individual to
notify everyone with whom he or she has
had sexual contact. Informing a partner
about the possibility of infection could save
a life.
