Chapter 18-3: Kingdoms &
Domains
Essential questions:
•What are 6 Kingdoms of life as currently
defined?
•What is the 3 domain system of
classification?
• The tree of life evolves
– Originally 2 kingdoms – plants & animals
– Then protists & bacteria put into kingdom
Protista
– Then, mushrooms & fungi put into kingdom
Fungi
– Then, bacteria (lacks nucleus) put into
kingdom Monera
– 1990’s: Monera broken into 2 groups:
Eubacteria & Archeabacteria
– 6 Kingdoms currently
• The 3 Domain system
– Based on molecular evidence of how long
organisms have been evolving independently
• Domain Bacteria – unicellular, prokaryotic
• Domain Archaea
– also unicellular & prokaryotic
– Live in extreme enviroments – volcanic hot springs, etc.
– Many will die in presence of oxygen
• Domain Eukarya – all organisms with nucleus
–
–
–
–
Protista – problematic b/c so much variety
Fungi – heterotrophs, feed on decaying plants/animals
Plantae – multicellular, autotrophs
Animalia – multicellular, heterotrophs
