Kingdoms
Changing System
Monerans????
• Bacteria use to be in one kingdomMonera
• It was changed due to new information
that showed chemical differences
between bacteria.
What are domains?
• A system for grouping organisms
according to the length of time that they
have evolved independently.
• Domains are larger than the classification
according to 6 kingdoms.
Domains
• Domain: Archae
– Kingdom: Archaebacteria
• Domain: Bacteria
– Kingdom: Eubacteria
• Domain: Eukarya
– Protista
– Fungi
– Plantae
– Animalia
Archaebacteria-Ancient Bacteria
•
•
•
•
Cell Type: no nucleus (prokaryotes)
Number of cells: unicellular organisms
Nutrition: autotrophs and heterotrophs
Examples: found on the ocean floor,
salty water, hot springs, your intestines.
Eubacteria-Bacteria
• Cell type: prokaryotes
• # of Cells: unicellular organisms
• Nutrition: some autotrophs and some
heterotrophs
• Examples: some are harmful like those that
cause strep throat and others are helpful like
the ones to make yogurt
• Extra fact: chemical makeup is different
from the archaebacteria
Protists-Many different types of
organisms
• Cell Type: eukaryotes
• # of Cells:
– Most – unicellular
– Some - multi-cellular
(sea weed)
• Nutrition: Some
plant-like (autotroph),
some animal-like
(heterotroph)
• Examples: Amoeba,
plasmodium
Fungi-Mushrooms, Molds
• Cell type:
eukaryotes
• # of cells:
multicellular
organisms
• Nutrition:
heterotrophs
• cell walls have chitin
(different substance
than the cell walls of
plants)
Plants-Numerous examples
•
•
•
•
•
Cell type: eukaryotes
# of cells: multicellular
Nutrition: autotrophs
Examples: trees, grass
Other fact: cellulose in cell
walls
Animals-Numerous examples
•
•
•
•
Cell type: eukaryotic
# of cells: multicellular
Nutrition: heterotrophs
Examples: dog, cat
Knowledge Check
• Which kingdoms include only
prokaryotes?
• Which kingdoms includes only
heterotrophic organisms?
• In which kingdom do you belong?
