Section 2:
The Study of Life
How are the branches of life science
related?
What are some big ideas in life science?
Page 21 in STAR
• Even though life science can be divided into
many branches, the different fields of study
overlap.
• Science can be divided into different branches
but the different fields of study often overlap.
1. Organisms are different but
share similar characteristics
All organisms are made of tiny building blocks called
cells
The chemical composition of all organisms is similar
All living things require energy
2. Change over time
 The gradual process of
change over time is called
evolution.
 Evolution takes many
generations and sometimes
millions of years
 Growth and development
occurs during an organism’s
lifetime (i.e. tadpole become
a frog)
3. Complementary Structure and Function
Structure is the way and organism is put
together
Functions are the processes that enable an
organism to survive
The structure and function are complementary,
meaning they work together (an owls eyes are
adapted to life at night and allow it to see when
there is little light)
4. Physical Principles
Life follows the same rules or principles as the
rest of nature
4. Physical Principles
Principles of chemistry explain the process that
allows plants to capture the sun’s energy
4. Physical Principles
Chemical processes explain how animals digest
their food
4. Physical Principles
The principals of physics help explain how eyes
work
