Water Our Treasure
A General Overview of the Water
Pollution Problem
Our Planet
• 71% of the surface is
covered by water:
Oceans, Fresh and
Groundwater
• Only 1% is fresh
water able to be used
• But it is polluted with
harmful substances
• We need water: 65%
of our body is water
Two ways of polluting the water
• Point Sources:
Waste dump through
pipes, sewers and
stormdrains .
• Nonpoint Sources :
pollution enter into the
water from a wide
area.
Four Chief Types of water pollution
• Toxic chemicals:
Metals (Such as lead
and mercury), organic
compounds ( such as
pesticides and waste
products from the
petrochemical
industry), and
radioactive waste.
Four Chief Types of water pollution
• Pathogens:
Bacteria, Viruses and
Protozoa.
Usually causes by
humans sewage or
animal nature getting
into organic matter.
Can causes serious
diseases such
cholera or polio.
Four Chief Types of water pollution
• Nutrients and
Biodegradable
organic matter:
Remains of animals and plants
( feces, leaves, waste, fat).
• These substances are
broken down by
decomposers
organisms into
mineral nutrients.
Four Chief Types of water pollution
• Physical agents:
Things like heat and
suspended solids
(such soil)
• Destroy the
usefulness of the
water
Treatment Plants
• Primary process:
reduces to 40% solid on
water and to a 70% the
organic material.
Kills bacteria
• Secondary process:
eliminates solid matters
and reduces organic
matters and nutrients
• Tertiary process:
chemical process to
remove long-live
poisonous chemicals
Taking Action
• Better enforcement
of antipollution
regulation
• Decreasing water
runoff
• Disposing of
hazardous materials
• Using biological
controls instead of
toxic pesticides
