• Biology is the study of life
• Biology explores life from the global to the
microscopic.
• All of life as we know it is found within the
biosphere (planet earth)
• The biosphere contains all ecosystems (the
living and non-living components of all
systems of the biosphere)
• In biology students study the following topics
– Cells that all living things are made of
– DNA / Genes which are molecules inside cells that
carry the code of life
– Humans, genetics and society
• Stem cells, cloning, GMO’s, current technology, genetic
disorders, mutations
– History of Life and how it continues to change as
the planet changes
– Ecology / Conservation
• Science is a Latin verb meaning “to know”
• Science is a way to answer questions about the
natural world
• At the heart of science is inquiry – that is to
answer questions about what people observe in
nature and actively seek answers
• Scientists group life into three domains
• Domains of Life
– Archaea
Consist of prokaryotic single cells
– Bacteria
– Eukarya (living things made of cells with a nucleus)
