CANCER HOUSES
BY ALLY DOW
STATISTICS
• According to the National Cancer Institute, and
cancer.gov, the number of new cases of colon and
rectum cancer was 43.7 per 100,000 men, and
women per year. Although the survival rate and
number of affected persons have gone down since
1992, it is still a terribly strong problem we have.
THE STORY
• No one plans on having cancer-it just happens. And it doesn’t discriminate against
anyone. Not that long ago, cancer was as talked about as Ebola recently was, and
now it is more and more common. However, just because it is common doesn’t mean
that it couldn’t happen to you, your family, or another loved one.
• One example of the sudden onset of cancer, lies within the story of Sarah Robinson. A
native to the state of Maine, Sarah died from brain cancer young. She noticed the
great need people in the state had for help in their fight with cancer-and not just
medically. Sarah is only one of so many people all of us know who may have had
cancer.
THE NEED
• Sarah noticed that many people receiving treatments from Eastern Maine Medical
Center had to travel great distances. Sometimes people would have to travel five or six
hours one way, once a week, for the duration of their treatment.
WHAT’S BEING DONE
• Sarah wanted patients and family members to have a place near the hospital that
they were receiving treatment from-so she came up with the idea of a cancer house. It
would give families and patients the option of staying close-by, and giving them a
piece of comfort while they were away from home.
• Sarah’s twin sister, Lindsay, and Sarah’s husband, Ben, have worked very hard to
make this vision of Sarah’s come true. Sarah’s house has been born, and is set to
open soon.
HOW THIS CAN AFFECT EVERYONE
• As I said, cancer doesn’t discriminate. And it happens all the time. What’s important
to realize is the affect that it can have on the body, and mind, as well as the families
of the cancer patient. It is not easy. However, everyone can make a difference in the
need by donating to cancer research foundations, volunteering at a hospital, even just
knowing there is a need helps. The more people that get involved, the more houses
like Sarah’s house, we can build.
