HOPE Model Engaging Survivors & Caregivers OBJECTIVE •Provide tools and information for engaging survivors and caregivers at Relay events and all year long Honor Survivors & Caregivers throughout the year Offer opportunities to be further involved with Relay For Life Provide Hope through information, education and services Engage survivors and caregivers as active American Cancer Society Volunteers HONOR SURVIVORS AND CAREGIVERS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR One of the core values of Relay For Life is the celebration of cancer survivorship and the support of caregivers throughout the cancer journey. Relay For Life honors and celebrates the hope that cancer survivors and caregivers provide to others facing cancer. HONOR •Focused Activities Year Around •Survivor/Caregiver Recognition •Speaking Opportunities at meetings and Relay activities OFFER OPPORTUNITIES TO BE FURTHER INVOLVED WITH RELAY FOR LIFE Translating the energy and spirit of Relay into yearround meaningful involvement is a powerful way for individuals to stay connected to the American Cancer Society mission. Involving more people in our lifesaving work is crucial. Relay For Life plays a key role in INVITING survivors and caregivers to stay engaged, EXCITING them about their role in the fight against cancer, and helping them to EXPLORE how they can help. OPPORTUNITY INVITE: •Invite survivors and caregivers to form or join a team •Encourage participants to invite cancer survivors and caregivers who have not participated to join them at Relay OPPORTUNITIES EXCITE: •Collect contact information. Communication is crucial to success and this also will be important as we engage survivors and caregivers year-round •Share information about year-round volunteer opportunities on Relay For Life committees. •Host survivor and caregiver socials or reunions during the year. OPPORTUNITIES Explore •Partner with local organizations (places of worship, cancer support groups, and local hospitals/cancer centers). This provides important networking opportunities to share information about the local Relay PROVIDE HOPE THROUGH INFORMATION, EDUCATION AND SERVICES Nationwide more than 500,000 cancer survivors at over 4,800 communities take up the fight against cancer through Relay For Life, making Relay a community’s “front door” to the American Cancer Society. Empowering participants to learn more, share more, and do more to fight cancer is what Relay For Life is all about. Through Relay, we can provide high quality information about Society programs and services that connect cancer survivors and caregivers to needed services. Provide •Lifesaving information – 1-800-ACS-2345 and www.cancer.org •Services and programs (such as Reach to Recovery) •How to volunteer (Relay, local programs, ACS CAN) ENGAGE SURVIVORS AND CAREGIVERS AS ACTIVE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY VOLUNTEERS Relay For Life isn’t only about walking around a track. For survivors and caregivers, the steps taken at this lifechanging event are just the first of many opportunities to provide hope to others facing cancer. To help connect survivors and caregivers with the many different ways they can deepen their involvement with the American Cancer Society all year long, it is important to share and engage people in these opportunities. ENGAGE •Invite survivors and caregivers to functions for both Relay For Life and other ACS programs and services. •Maintain communication year-round and provide information about volunteer opportunities. •Brainstorm engagement strategies with your committee and include follow-up action plans. •Connect with survivors and caregivers year-round through notes and newsletters.
