YOU can do it!

Why?
OPAC’s are great-for their intended
purpose (i.e. searching for items)
 Web 2.0 tools allow libraries to get a
presence on the web, for free, that people
(hopefully) will want to see
 Flickr allows libraries to advertise
themselves and re-brand libraries as
something other than a warehouse for
books




Create a Yahoo Account

Done
Tagging
Comparable to keyword searching, but
driven by users not catalogers
 Key is to use good tags that will bring
casual surfers to your pictures (and
hopefully to your library)

Difficulties
Scottsdale cut the link between the Library’s web
site and Flickr (Youtube as well)
 Logic was that user might play around with
Flickr and Youtube and see something bad
 Both sites do pull bad stuff when they catch or
are told
 Bad stuff exists on the web, denying it or
denying access to the web achieves nothing

Why
 How
 Other sites
 Difficulties

Why?
The web is driven by new and exciting.
“You” literally have milliseconds to get a
person’s attention.
 An OPAC won’t cut it, but Youtube can
 Means of saving library server space and
still get info out to world
 Free! Really is easy to use
 http://youtube.com/index

How?






A tad more complicated that Flickr (although if
willing to sacrifice quality, can buy/use digital
video cameras strictly designed to create
Youtube videos)
http://www.theflip.com/
Create film (I have a Sony video camera)
Edit film (After our pod/video podcasting class, I
got an Apple to edit)
Turn raw footage into Quicktime video-Youtube
quality
Upload-adding tags, descriptions
Editing
Most video cameras have editing capability
 Most computers have editing capability
built in (muvee) or buy cheap editing
software from “Fry’s Electronics”
 I bought an Apple laptop. Editing was
pretty easy and converting to Quicktime
and uploading was very easy

Other Sites
Like MySPace knock-offs, there are a
plethora of YouTube “killers”
 Google video (yes, even though they own
Youtube)
 Yahoo video
 Current (Al Gore’s)

Difficulties
If have people-need releases
 Don’t use stolen copyrighted info-potential
trouble is patrons use your equipment for
video
 Forced to have video reviewed before
uploading (City of Scottsdale Policy)
 Fear-user might explore site and see bad
things and blame library

