What’s New and Excellent
in Computer Science 2004
Unix Servers, Thin Clients,
Network Applications and
Development Software
What’s Old?
 The davinci server
(Enterprise 6500)
ceased to be on
Sunday, September 5
at 1:45 pm.
 Specs:
o 12 processors,
o UltraSPARC II 336 MHz
o 33 MHz bus
o 8 GB RAM
What’s Old?
 Support for X
terminals is being
eliminated.
o Fonts
o Colour depth
o Speed
o Cost
What’s Old?
 IBM Intellistations from
1999.
What’s Getting Old?
 Our Cabletron SSRclass core switches
o Fully populated
o Do not support 10
GB/sec connections
o Limited manageability
o No edge protection
New Server Systems
 Two new Sun V880
systems
o 16 GB RAM
o 150 MHz system bus
o Much faster processors
8 x 1.2 GHz uSPARC III
 Independent yet
integrated
o Shared home directories
o Same user directory
o Distributed applications




sol vs. luna
Both machines have identical architecture
yet have different roles
sol runs desktop applications, publishing
tools, editors, basic Web services, email
luna runs development tools, compilers,
simulators, advanced Web services.
The goal is to make sol highly available and
put “risky” applications on luna.
New Wireless Access Method
 Any user with a valid
UWin ID can access the
computer science
wireless network.
 Navigate to any Web
page, and the login
page will appear.
 Use secure methods to
connect to servers.
Wireless Growth
 Use of the Computer Science WLAN has
increased and is growing.
 The coverage of the ITS network is growing,
and ITS is now using the same captive portal
model for authentication.

New PC’s in the Lab
Carry your Data
 The new PC’s support
a variety of external
devices from the
front panel.
 Don’t store files
locally on the PC as
they will be
eliminated on reboot.
New Leddy Library Lab
 All X terminals have
been replaced with
SunRay’s
 New furniture
 Significant network
improvements

Upgrades to Web Site
A “Content History” link has been added to
the Member page so that you can see old
seminar announcements, etc.
Course descriptions have been
“synchronized” with the official descriptions.
Added a Media Archive section.
Added a Downloads section.

New Archive Server
 Backup to disk has become cost effective.
 The Powervault server can be used to
archive documents from a PC to a server.
 All faculty have a MS network share
\\powervaultpc\userid
Rough Edges in the Transition
 A week of roughness while the new servers
were put into position to replace davinci.
 All links to davinci.newcs.uwindsor.ca
still work.
 The use of cs.uwindsor.ca is preferred
 There is some confusion about sol and luna.
 There is no spam filter on sol, pending a
decision from ITS regarding PureMessage
UWin ID Integration
 We have migrated towards using the
campus-wide standard UWin ID for
authentication in our systems.
 This eliminates the need to remember many
passwords and makes the entire network
more secure.
 It is linked to the Human Resources system
and the Student Information System so
accounts are generated automatically.

Future Directions
 Version control for
documents and code
 Network management
and speed upgrades
 Database server
expansion and upgrade
