Web 2.0
Savior or Tempter?
A Revolutionary Concept
Web 2.0 involves creating a user-created
and user-edited Internet system
Anybody and everybody can be part of it
Examples include Wikipedia, blogs,
MySpace, Skype, and others
Wave of the Future?
► Web
2.0 has shown by far the largest
growth of any aspect in the Internet
industry in recent years
► Is this because Web 2.0 is truly a successful
idea, or just because it is so new and so
novel?
► Will Web 2.0 continue to grow, or is it’s
potential merely an elaborate illusion?
Web 2.0 as the Internet’s Messiah
• Web 2.0 is seen by many to bring necessary
vitality to the sterile Internet
• It gives users a heightened sense of importance
and connection to the world
• Web 2.0 has proven instrumental in rejuvenating
the Internet industry
• It has provided innovations such as Skype which
makes everyday life easier and increases the
connection of people to the Internet
The Coming Web 2.0 Crash
Many people don’t believe that Web 2.0 can sustain its
current growth level for long
The responsibility required of users could scare off
investors in the future
These economics could indicate the strength of stocks
such as Google’s are hyper inflated and foretelling a
massive crash
If people stop believing that Web 2.0 can provide an
Internet panacea they will stop investing, and the Web
2.0 market will collapse
It is believed Web 2.0 relies almost solely on ad
revenues, the providing of which is not growing as
quickly as Web 2.0 sites, so in the near future there will
not exist revenues to support these sites adequately,
forcing a massive economic crash of Web 2.0
Impacts of ‘Crash 2.0’
Web 2.0’s ability to grow will disappear, and many of
the favored aspects of it will be gone
The ability to interact with websites, that interpersonal
connection, will largely be gone if ‘Crash 2.0’ occurs
The strong educational quality of Web 2.0 will almost
certainly be absconded
Some sociologists believe it will actually lead to more
personal interaction and relationships with the demise
of the ‘cyberelations’
So opinion is divided on whether cutting off this
powerful connections tool will join or alienate people
Web 2.0 in Schools
Though many see Web 2.0 as being
mostly personal, such as MySpace or
blogs, educational use is critical
The future of Web 2.0 cannot
continue unless it is incorporated
thoroughly into academia
Web 2.0 contains vast stockpiles of
information, but educators are
skeptical of its reliability and accuracy
The Facts of Misinformation
The inherent unreliability of information o n Web
2.0 will force users to use more discernment in
their research
It will wean the populace out of the mindset that
anything stated on the Internet is true, so
prevalent on the traditional Internet
People are more mature than often supposed
with information they make public
Wikipedia has been classified as equaling the
Encyclopedia Britannica in depth and accuracy
Y?
Web 2.0 should not be looked at a
separate invention, merely an inevitable
outgrowth of the Internet
No matter how valuable it is, Web 2.0 is
an inevitable development in the Internet
The use of these technologies gives a
whole new dimension to the Internet
A Final Bow
Web 2.0 engages users, particularly
students, in the activities of the Internet
more than ever before
Web 2.0 is the natural next step of
Internet technologies
The success of these new technologies is
uncertain, but Web 2.0 is here to stay
It is virtually an entirely new outlet and
style of research for students
