I recently read Crash by Jerry Spinelli. This is a
story about 7th grade boy named John “Crash” Coogan.
Crash is a football star for his school. He and his best
friend, Mike, love to bully and torment their dorky
classmate, Penn Webb. By the end of the story, Crash
learns who his true friends are and the importance of
accepting others for their differences.
When I began reading Crash, I was wondering,
“Why is Crash so mean to Penn?” But, the more I read I

was able to infer that deep down he really did like him. I

also predicted that something bad might happen to

Crash’s grandfather, Scooter. I was right, the poor guy

suffered a stroke and had to spend a long time in the

hospital. I can connect to the character, Crash, because

when I was in middle school, I learned how to pick better

friends that would not get me in trouble, just like he did.

As I read, I visualized a school and students, just like here

at Swartz Creek Middle School. This is a great book, that
all students could benefit from reading.
