• What is a wiki?
– A piece of software that allows users to freely
create and edit Web page content using any

– The result is a product of collaboration by the
whole community
– The most well-known example is
www.wikipedia.org, but schools and
workplaces are using them for many different
applications
Wikis at Work
• Some of the things a wiki could do:
– Keep a staff or common contacts directory upto-date more easily
– Create a database of FAQs and other
information needed for people to collaborate
effectively
– Make an up-to-date employee handbook
available
• Can be kept on secure pages, so that only
employees can access them
Blogging
• Blogs are one of the tools that companies and
organizations are looking into as tools to
facilitate communication
• What could a blog be used for?
– Outreach to the community
– Internal blog to keep employees current

• Be Careful! Personal blogging at work could

RSS Feeds
• What is an RSS Feed?
– A format for delivering regularly changing web
content
– Many online news organizations, blogs and
other online publishers use them
– Filter out spam and advertisements
• How do I access an RSS Feed?
– Utilize a feed reader to subscribe to RSS
feeds and get to-the-minute updates
• Some examples are NewzCrawler, NewsGator,
My Yahoo, and Google Reader
Social Bookmarking
• What is social bookmarking?
– Rather than saving a webpage in your browser, you
save it on the web
• What are the advantages of social
bookmarking?
– Access your bookmarks from anywhere
– Tag your bookmarks for easy browsing
– Share your bookmarks with co-workers, and see their
bookmarks too
• Some social bookmarking sites:

Social Networking
• What is online social networking?
– Online communities of people who share
interests or activities.
– There are many sites devoted to online social
networking.
• External Social Networks (Facebook, Twitter,
LinkedIn)
• Internal Social Networks may be only for
employees of an organization, or by invitation only

• How can social networks be used for work?
– Connect people for little to no cost
– LinkedIn is specifically for connecting
professionals
– Learn from colleagues all over the country, or
all over the world
– Useful tool for organizing conferences, planning
business trips and meeting schedules
– Sharing information, tips and tools
Web Conferencing
• What is web conferencing?
– Used to conduct live meetings or presentations
via the internet
– All participants must have an internet
connection
– Use live/streaming video, PowerPoint
presentations, whiteboards
• Some good web-based sites:
– Elluminate, WebEx, GoToMeeting
Online Training
• Online training uses platforms like web
conferencing to deliver training
• Convenient – learn at your desk
• Cost-effective – no travel costs
• There are lots of providers of online training,
