Image basics
• Resolution
• Web: 72 dpi
• Print: 300 dpi or greater
• Format
• Photos: .jpg
• For web, compress to lowest acceptable quality (0-100)
• For web, crop and resize to lowest acceptable physical size (e.g. 150px
by 100px)
• .Simpler imagery: .png, .gif
• Best for images with large areas of flat color
• Both support transparency
• .gif’s support animation
Licensing Your Own Work
• CC has a License Wizard to help you choose best type
• http://creativecommons.org/choose/
• It’ll return the most appropriate license along with the
code to embed it onto a webpage
• It also allows the viewer to click through to learn more
about the license
Flickr: Adding A Default License
• Go to You>Your Account at top of page
• Choose Privacy and Permissions tab at top of page
• Choose Edit at the right of “What License will your
content have?”
• Choose your license
Flickr: Uploading Images
• Choose Upload at top of page
• Add title, description, tags in second step
• Colorado State University, Extension are suggested
• Add “© Colorado State University” to description
• All rights should already be reserved from the default
license setting
• Keep privacy settings reasonably public
Flickr: Working With Existing Licenses
• License type usually in lower right
• Click text for more specifics
• At top: Explore>Creative Commons>Choose License
type
• Use the search function within License category (e.g. community
gardens), so you can get legally usable images that match your
search
Flickr: Downloading Images
• Don’t just right-click and save
• To download
• Just above picture: Actions>View All
Sizes
• Choose best size, then click Download
the ___ size of this photo
Google: Working With Existing Licenses
• Use Advanced Search to help pare down legally
available images
• Check the rights on specific images after you find them
• Much broader search than Flickr
• Blogs, Websites, Flickr, Wikipedia Commons
• License type is usually below image
• Depends on where image is housed
