Did you Know? Student Resources at
El Camino College
◦ Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS)
Help for the financially disadvantaged
Where? Student activity center, 2nd floor.
◦ Special Resource Center
Where? In back of Student Activity Center
Offers help to physically challenged students.
◦ Student Health Center – Offers help with health and
psychological problems, like test anxiety – a principal
factor behind student no-shows to tests and make-ups.
Where? In physical education complex, pool building.
◦ Writing Center – Offers help with writing
Where? Humanities building
◦ Reading Success Center – Offers help with reading.
Where? Library East Basement.
And finally…
◦ Basic Skills classes in English and Math. Absolutely
necessary if your language skills prevent you from
understanding the lecture or comprehending the
textbook and handouts.
◦ A strong indication that your language skills are
deficient is that you fail the quiz on the syllabus.
Resources Specific to this Class
◦ Me! – available at stated times but also often into the
afternoon. Non-threatening and non-judgemental.
◦ Anthropology Tutor in the Tutoring Center. Ian Mautner –
outstanding anthropology student & musician.
Where? 2nd Floor Library. Days and times also TBA.
Exams and Make-Ups: Excuses that
fall under the make-up policy
◦ Death/funeral of close family member.
◦ Serious illness of close family member, requiring
hospitalization.
◦ Illness to self.
◦ Important ritual involving self or close family member.
◦ Serious auto accident involving injury or trauma.
◦ Court appearance.
Excuses that are acceptable, but will only
defer taking the test during the specific
period in question.
◦ Child care crisis.
◦ Non-injury accident.
◦ Dead battery or flat tire in auto.
◦ Other transportation crises (missed bus, friend did not show).
In these cases the exam must be taken either later during the
scheduled day, or the very next day before the next class
meeting..
Excuses that are not acceptable
◦ Caring for a relative with a chronic condition (e.g.
diabetes).
◦ Emergencies involving boyfriends or girlfriends.
◦ Family vacations or destination rituals.
◦ Routine doctor’s or dentist’s appointments.
◦ Illnesses or rituals involving distant relatives, boyfriend’s
relatives, etc.
Excuses that are valid, but will usually
result in a student failing the class.
◦Relatives’ funeral in a foreign country.
◦Extended illness.
◦Chronic and profound psychological condition.
◦Marital break-up.
Keys to Success
◦Attend Class – Every class you miss will
lower your grade on an exam by one
grade level.
◦Do the readings.
◦Visit me or the tutor if you don’t understand
something
