GENETICS REVIEW
GREGOR MENDEL
Father of modern genetics
Austrian monk
First experimented on ordinary pea
plants because they are small and
easy to grow.
Cross pollinated garden pea plants
to study their trait.
TERMS TO REMEMBER
Fertilization – union of gametes to produce an of fspring.
Trait – a specific characteristic such as eye color, height, seed
color, coat color.
Hybrids – Of fspring of crosses between parents with dif ferent
traits.
Alleles – Dif ferent form of a gene.
Genes – Factors that are passed from parent to of fspring
Gametes – Sex cells
Phenotype – Physical trait
Genotype – Genetic make up represented by letters
Homozygous – Organisms that has two identical alleles for a
particular gene.
Heterozygous – Organisms that has dif ferent alleles for the
same gene
TERMS TO REMEMBER
Dominant – A trait that appears in the of fspring.
Recessive – A trait that is carried in the genes but does not
appear in the of fspring.
MENDEL’S CONCLUSION
1. An individual’s characteristics are
determined by factors (genes) that
are passed from one parental
generation to the next.
2. Principle of Dominance – States
that some alleles are dominant and
others are recessive.
QUICK LAB
Refer to page 311 of your Biology Textbook.
Do the Quick Lab – Guided Inquiry on page
311 on a piece of lined paper.
Answer the analyze and Conclude # 1 – 2 and
write your answers on the lined paper along
with your table of Trait Survey.
Graph your answers on a piece of graphing
paper (provide your own!) – you may use a bar
graph or a line graph or any kind of graph
appropriate for your data.
