Reaching Your Potential
Unit One
Your Life Path
From
birth to death the roads you take
Your path is unique to everyone elses
You have direct and indirect influences on
people as others have on you.
An example of each of these influences?
You are Changing
As
a teenager our society expects you to
achieve many different developmental
tasks.
These tasks help you become a
successful adult.
What are some developmental tasks? (23)
Understanding and Accepting
Yourself
Who
am I?
Do you know who you are?
Take a minute to write down at least 5 things
about who you are
Know
who you are, this can take a long
time to really find out who you are.
Life changes, different influences etc
DO NOT pretend to be something you are
not.
Accept yourself
Activity
Write
down five things about who you are.
How are these things going to help you in
the future?
Are they adaptable to change as your life
changes? Or are you open to change?
What can influence you?
Growing to Maturity
Knowing
what you are good at and bad at
helps you to strengthen choices and goals
to be prepared for the future.
If you are not good at drawing probably do not
want to become an artist.
You
will make better decisions and be
more responsible.
These are expectations of you as you go
into adulthood.
Developing Mature Relationships
As
a teen your relationship with your
parents changes.
Less dependent on them
Respect your parents more as you get older
Friendships
change
More mature
Care more for their well-being
Have good friends of both sexes
Learn to work well within a group
Preparing for an Occupation
Do
not expect to get one job and that be it
for the rest of your life
Work is a need in order to provide income.
Time is now to try and think of your skills
and interests and abilities to choose a
career.
Going on to school after high school will
prepare you for a job you more likely will
be happy with than not.
Preparing for Marriage and Family
Living
Again,
being who you are, knowing who
you are, talking with friends and family and
learning to make decisions with others will
all prepare you.
You should be with someone that
understands you, supports you, and
makes you feel better about yourself
Preparing for Change
Normal part of life
Is feared, but that is ok
We are more comfortable with what we know.
Do not like to get outside our boxes, but is
important to so we grow and understand
differences are open to them and are less
judgmental of others.
This can be done by gathering information,
developing skills to help us adjust and being prepared
or have a plan (just remember to be able to adjust
plans if needed).
Why You are the Way You Are
What
has shaped you into the person you
are today?
Heredity-qualities passed on down through
generations, ex: hair color
Genetic Counseling-tracing it back

who may inherit diseases, eye color, hair
color etc.

Ex: mom with brown hair (dominant gene)
and dad with red hair(recessive gene)
what would their kids look like for hair
color?
