1. Definition

occurring disorders of the respiratory system.
2. Learn about different activities, techniques, and
exercises, including breathing programs, for
individuals with respiratory disorders that physical
therapists, educators and fitness trainers can use.

Most Common Respiratory Disorders
Asthma
A chronic disease in which periodic attacks
are followed by periods of remission of the
symptoms
Cause: swelling of the mucous membrane
lining the bronchial tubes, excessive
secretion of mucous and spasms of the
bronchial tubes.
Hay Fever
Extrinsic Asthma
Exercise Induced Asthma (EIA)
Treatment: physical activity, American
Academy of Pediatrics recommends that
asthmatic children be encouraged to
participate in physical education and
sport programs. Inhalers and prescribed
drugs.
An allergic disease caused by sensitivity to
specific substances in the air (mold, pollen).
Effects only the upper level of the
respiratory system.
Can be a possible precursor to asthma.
Treatment: Avoid the allergen and use
antihistamines or other drugs.
Most Common Respiratory Disorders
Cystic Fibrosis
Cause: heredity; inherited as a Mendelian
or recessive trait; both parents must carry
the trait.
An abnormality or inadequacy of some
hormone or enzyme of the body that affects
the excretion of mucus, saliva, and
perspiration.
Bronchitis
Cause: the long term inhalation of
irritants such as dust and tobacco fumes.
Symptoms:
Interfere with the processes of breathing and
digestion.
Treatment: Procedures to drain liquids
from the lungs, dieting to avoid fatty
foods and ensure ingestion of large
amounts of protein.
An inflammation of the bronchi of the lungs.
Acute
Chronic
Treatment: antibiotics and medications to
loosen phlegm and postural drainage.

Needs and Adjustments
To keep students motivated and engaged in physical
activity, teachers can:
Develop a social acceptance
Paper towels and tissue
Positive attitude
Teach techniques of conscious relaxation.
Yoga, tai chi, static stretching.
Will create a successful and relaxing environment for students
who are in poor physical condition and can motivate them to want
to try other physical education activities.
