What is Art?
The expression or application of human creative
skill and imagination It is typically in a visual
form
Examples:
-painting or sculpture
-producing works to be appreciated primarily for
their beauty or emotional power
Art as a Developing Factor: in the
Renaissance
• The Renaissance took place: (1350-1550)
• During this time period: newer and livelier
trends were developed in architecture,
sculpture and music
• This led to the development of multidimensional arts

Titian
(1477-1576) famous venetian painter of
religious paintings and was famous for using
auburn color, in 1516 he was named the official
painter of the Republic of Italy
Michelangelo
• (1475-1564) He was an Italian sculptor painter,
architect and poet.
• One of the founders of the High Renaissance
• One of the exponents of mannerism
Mannerism
• 1580 (Italy)- 17th century(spread throughout
Europe)
• Was influenced by harmonious ideals and
restrained naturalism (Leonardo da Vinci,
Raphael, and Michelangelo)
• Noted for its intellectual sophistication and
artificial qualities
Vernacular Literature
• Latin=the language of scholars in the ‘middle
ages’
• Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio(the Three
Crowns)= the great poets of this age
• They produced immortal works that continue
to influence writers today
Scientific and Technical Development
• People accepted as true only what seemed logical
• Came in contact with the Arabs and learned
modern math and chemistry

• Copernicus proved that the Earth revolved

around the Earth

• Unity among the people started to develop

• Trade and commerce revived and improved in
an orderly political atmosphere
• New trade routes were made
– Modern cities were established with urban
communities
• Classes were formed in society
– Middle class and the compromising business class
people=more prominent
The Renaissance was the bridge from early and
prehistoric art to modern art. Using ore vivid
and vibrant colors and different styles of art to
portray and symbolize religion and the European
life-style the art of the Renaissance impacted
and influence art around the world even to this
day
