Transcript Insulin
INSULIN
TYPE OF HORMONE
Peptide Hormone
Secretes into the blood stream and has endocrine functions
Proteins that have endocrine functions
Has a few amino acids that change metabolism
GLAND WHERE INSULIN IS FOUND
Found in the pancreas
Beta cells make the insulin
Then gets glucose from the blood
THE FUNCTION
Regulates carbohydrates and fat metabolism in the body
Causes cells in liver to take up glucose from the blood
Maintain low blood glucose levels
Generate hypoglycemia-generating hormones
When we eat, blood sugar rises
Then insulin is released into the blood stream
CONTROL
Negative feedback
Reduce stimuli
Glucose levels are regulated
Shut off original stimuli
HYPER
Hypoglycemia
Low blood glucose (sugar)
Is linked to diabetes
Glucose can’t reach the blood stream fast enough
Or too much insulin is released into the blood stream
Also glucose used up to quickly
Hypo
Diabetes
Blood sugar must be controlled
To much sugar can damaged blood vessels and nerves if in the blood stream too
long
Two different types of diabetes type 1 and type 2
Type 1- injections of insulin everyday
Cells from a person with diabetes have a problem taking in glucose
Either from lack of insulin or a resistance of insulin
Can’t overdose in insulin
