Spain’s close ties to the Church brought the
Renaissance
Cardinal Jimenez: Close to the king, believed in
learning. Founded universities Made a Bible with three
columns: Greek, Hebrew, Latin
Philip II: Very religious, did not trust scholars
Built El Escorial: palace, art gallery, tomb, church,
symbol of power and devotion
Arts flourished still in Toledo
El Greco: Greek painter whose figures had long bodies
Cervantes: wrote Don Quixote, a story about a knight
